The Third Column
A novel about work, machines, and the last years in which the work still belonged to people. It opens on a warehouse floor at 3:14 in the morning, nine seconds from the end of the world, with a man reaching for a box. “It was not their successor. It was their dependent.”

About the press
A windrow is the long row a rake leaves behind in a field — and the row of set type a compositor leaves on the stone. We took the name because both are the same gesture: gathering something loose into a line you can carry.
Windrow Press is four people working above a former print shop. We read everything that comes to us, edit slowly, and pay our authors on acceptance rather than on publication. Books are printed on paper we choose ourselves, sewn rather than glued wherever the length allows.
Submissions
Reading periods open in January and in August, for one month each. We accept work from writers living in Canada, and translations into English from any language.
- Fiction: the first fifty pages, plus a page telling us what the rest of the book does.
- Poetry: fifteen to twenty poems from a manuscript in progress.
- Translation: thirty sample pages, the original text, and a note on the rights.
Send one PDF to reading@windrowpress.ca. We answer every submission, though it takes us about four months.
